Should Denmark Arm Greenland?
Trump says U.S. will 'get Greenland,' military force may not be needed but not ruled out
When Russia did a snap invasion of Ukraine, it included an airborne assault on an airbase right outside of the Ukraine capital Kyiv. Things looked grim and the Russians might be at the gates of Kyiv in hours or maybe a couple of days. The Ukrainian authorities distributed 50,000 old rifles they had stockpiled. This was sort of a doomsday arsenal for use when all else failed. The city authorities alerted Kyiv residents to come and get a rifle if they wanted to actively defend the city from the Russian invaders. All this had to be done quickly, because nobody knew if the Ukrainian army fighting at the airbase could stop the elite Russian airborne forces.
Men, women, boys and girls all showed up, volunteers, to collect a rifle and willing to fight. The city ran out of their 50,000 rifles.
My point with all this is I suspect Denmark and the government of Greenland are having conversations about arming the civilian population in the event of an invasion either by Americans or Russians. Or maybe these kind of provisions have already been made years ago. Denmark can provide the guns but arming civilians or a sedentary militia is probably not their call. Ultimately this is a question only the government of Greenland can decide. How badly do they want to stay independent?
